Las gallinas que llegan al Santuario siempre tienen que tener unos cuidados muy especiales, porque llegan en tan mal estado debido a la explotación a la que han sido sometidas, que enferman muy rápido y muchas de ellas mueren.
Siempre tenemos a alguna enferma apartada del resto, a la que cada día hay que medicar, incluso las tenemos que alimentar embuchándolas, como aparece en esta fotografía, ya que cuando se sienten mal dejan de comer.
Las gallinas han sido seleccionadas genéticamente para que pongan un huevo cada día, llegando a poner unos 300 al año, cuando lo normal sería que pusieran 30 repartidos en 3 puestas de 10 huevos cada una.
Tienen una esperanza de vida de unos 15 años, pero debido a la explotación que han sido sometidas, a los dos años en las granjas las envían al matadero, y eso ocurre también en las llamadas granjas ecológicas, ya que al bajar la producción de huevos no les son rentables.

The hens who come to the Sanctuary always need special care. When they arrive, their health is very deteriorated due to the exploitation they have suffered. They tend to get ill very quickly and many of them pass away.
There’s usually one of them sick, kept apart from the others. The sick ones need daily medication, some even need manual feeding (as shown in this picture), because they give up eating when they’re feeling unwell.
Hens have been genetically selected to lay eggs on a daily basis, raising up to 300 eggs per year. The norm would be around 30 eggs per year in three different lays throughout the year, around 10 eggs per lay.
Their lifespan is around 15 years, but due to the exploitation they go through in farms, they’re sent to the slaughterhouse after two years. This also happens in organic farms. When their egg production diminishes, they’re not profitable anymore.
