Marieke es una mula que ha sido utilizada durante 40 años para arar el campo y cargar troncos.
Donde vivía es normal que cuando se hacen mayores y dejan de ser útiles se les dé un «pescozón» , que consiste en un golpe en la nuca para matarla. Pero Marieke tuvo la suerte de que las personas que la tenían contactaran con la Asociación Cacereña para la Protección y Defensa de los Animales y contactaran con nosotros para que pudiera venir a vivir sus últimos días a Santuario Gaia.
Hemos recorrido 2.000 Km para traerla desde Cáceres hasta Girona. Ha sido un viaje muy duro, tanto físicamente como emocionalmente, ya que aparte del cansancio de recorrer tantos kilómetros en muy poco tiempo, el estado de Marieke ha dificultado mucho su traslado.
Durante el recorrido hicimos una parada en el santuario madrileño El Valle Encantado que nos dio posada para que Marieke pudiera descansar una noche. Vinieron a vernos los responsables del otro santuario madrileño Santuario Wings of Heart y así conocer a Marieke y darnos todo su apoyo. Fueron momentos muy bonitos compartiendo experiencias de los refugiados que habitan en los Santuarios.
Al reanudar el viaje tuvimos que hacer un alto para que Marieke pudiera descansar, pero al bajarla del remolque sus piernas le fallaron y se desplomó. La mala suerte de que el suelo era de arena y cada vez que intentaba levantarse resbalaba y se volvía a caer. Fueron los momentos más difíciles porque veíamos que perdía fuerzas y se rendía. Intentamos levantarla con la ayuda de varias personas que estaban en ese área de servicio, pero era imposible, así que tuvimos que llamar a emergencias. El 112 contactó con la Guardia Civil, pero le dijeron que ellos no podían hacer nada y además, nos advirtieron que si salía Marieke a la vía pública, nos multarían.
Tuvimos la inmensa suerte de contactar con los bomberos de la Diputación de Zaragoza que se personaron enseguida y nos ayudaron a levantarla, junto con la ayuda de otras personas que había allí preocupadas. Momento muy emotivo al ver como todos querían ayudar a salvar a Marieke.
Ahora ya está en el Santuario, no sabemos el tiempo que vivirá, pero lo que si sabemos es que será una mula feliz y en libertad, sin cadenas y sin ser explotada.

Set free from chains after 40 years.
Marieke is a mule who has been used during 40 years to plough the fields and carry logs.
Where she comes from it’s common practice to kill them by a «pescozón» once they become old and stop being useful. A «pescozón» is a blow on the back of the neck. Marieke was fortunate because the people who owned her contacted the Asociación Cacereña para la Protección y Defensa de los Animales (Caceres Animals Protection and Defense League), who in turn contacted us so that Marieke could live the remainder of her days in Santuario Gaia.
We have travelled 2,000 Kilometres to bring her from Cáceres to Girona. It’s been a hard journey, both physically and emotionally. It wasn’t only the exhaustion after travelling so many Kilometres in so little time, but also Marieke’s physical condition which has made the journey very difficult.
During the trip we stopped-over in the Madrid sanctuary El Valle Encantado so that Marieke could rest during the night. The people in charge of the another sanctuary in Madrid, Santuario Wings of Heart, came to see and give us their support and to meet Marieke too. It was a great time sharing experiences of the refugees who live in the Sanctuaries.
When we resumed the journey, we stopped for a while to let Marieke have a break. When she got out from the van her legs failed and she fell down. It was very unfortunate that she fell on sandy ground and each time she tried to stand up, she slipped and fell down again. It was a very difficult time because we could see her losing the strength and giving up. We tried to raised her aided by several people, but it was impossible so we had to contact the emergency services. The 112 service contacted the police but were told they could do nothing and we were advised that if Marieke invaded the road we would be fined.
Fortunately we contacted the Diputación de Zaragoza fire brigade who arrived very fast. They helped us to lift her up with the assistance of other worried people who were at the scene. It was very heart-touching seeing how everybody wanted to help to save Marieke.
Now she’s finally in the Sanctuary. We don’t know how long she will live, but what we know is that she’ll be a happy and free mule, unchainned and not abused anymore.
