Rita es una vaca de 20 años que vivía en Cantabria, pero la ganadera que se hacía cargo de ella se hizo vegetariana, cesó su actividad como tal y quiso que Rita sea la primera de otras vacas que llegarán a Santuario Gaia.
Rita es de una raza que son utilizadas para carne, cada año tienen una cría que es enviada al matadero cuando alcanzan el peso deseado. Ella al ser tan mayor su destino era ya el matadero, porque cuando llegan el invierno son encerradas en establos por el frío, pero debido a su edad ya no aguantan tanto tiempo encerradas, así que la solución para los ganaderos es que acabar con sus vidas.
Por suerte Rita ha tenido un final feliz, y ahora ha comenzado una nueva vida. Está conociendo a los demás habitantes del Santuario, y cada día está más confiada. Le encanta que la cepillen y levanta su cabeza y la cola para hacérnoslo más fácil, disfruta mucho.
La adaptación de ella será lenta, no hay prisas, hay que hacerlo bien. Los primeros días no quería salir de su habitación y ahora en cuanto le abrimos la puerta sale para observarlo todo. Se asusta cuando ve a los pavos, y se queda muy asombrada cuando ve que Samuel, Tina y Pedro, que son de su misma especie, nos quieren tanto. Muy pronto disfrutará de la compañía de toda la familia Gaia.

Rita is a 20 year old cow from Cantabria. The farmer ho had her became vegetarian and gave up farming. She wanted Rita to be the first of her cows to come to Santuario Gaia.
Rita is from a breed raised for their meat. Every year, they give birth to calves who are sent to slaughter once they reach the desired weight. Rita is an old lady and her fate was the slaughterhouse. Cows of her age are confined in stables during the winter. Their old age makes them unable to spend long periods indoors and the only solution for the farmers is ending their lives.
Fortunately Rita’s story had a happy ending and her new life has just started. She’s started to meet the other residents of the Sanctuary and she’s becoming more trusting each new day. She loves being brushed and raises her head and tail to help us.
Her adaptation is going to be slow, there’s no rush. When she arrived she didn’t want to leave her dormitory whereas now she goes out to observe everything around her as soon as her door gets open. She gets scared if she sees the turkeys but gets astonished when she sees Samuel, Tina and Pedro who are from the same species. She will soon be able to enjoy the company of the whole Gaia family.
