Birds don’t usually get much empathy from humans. Maybe it’s because they’re not mammals and we don’t feel identified with them. However, a bird is not that different from a mammal: they are very intelligent, each individual has their own personality, and it has been shown that they can have they same feelings we do: from love to grief after losing a dearest one, or even loneliness or the need to protect offsprings.

Today we’ve lived a very tender moment in the recovery area of the sanctuary. Ismael, one of Gaia Sanctuary co-founders, was sat with Esperança in his arms, a broiler chick who arrived to the sanctuary this week. He was cuddling and pampering her, when Fina, another hen who was also around, came running to them after realising what was going on. She immediately jump into Ismael to be cuddled and pampered too. After all we’re not that different and we all like being loved.
